'Be that difference' is a project that raises awareness to the public of the damages  that paper cups are causing. The public is unaware of the consequences that come with the creation of paper cups, but only the convenience behind them. Paper cups has a layer the keeps the liquid in place without the cup leaking, but it is because of the layer of coating that prevents them from being recycled. Damages such as floods, wild life extinction and land fill could be prevented with the solution of the public bringing their own cup for their refreshments. The project presents itself showing a promotional video, interactive poster and website.

What?

Purpose

Why?

Development/Creation

Overall Goal

The purpose of presenting the project in video, poster and website format is solely because it is a great base to develop and the best way to reach out to the audience. Social media is by far the most commonly used source for the world, therefore videos and website could easily to shown and seen to the public where as posters are most commonly seen and noticed in the public. The being to make things different from the standard way of how normal video, poster and websites are usually, added elements such as interactivity and ownership making it stand out to the public eye.

These differences are made to make the poster, video and website is to give the creative element, the reason behind this is to show the message of the project in a more distinctive style.

The poster is made with the purpose of being drawn on, giving the audience a more interactive way to understand the message through images and action instead of just words. How the poster works is the viewer draws on the outlined cup whatever they feel like, then taking a selfie with the poster and send it to the website to have their cup created. The cup would then be the viewers very own cup giving them more ownership and connection to the cup and a reason to use it in their routine.

The video is done differently by having little to no commentary/voice over, just short brief images and scenes to get across to the audience the message that needs to be heard. The video also shows interaction with the audience where to main character talks to audience as well as showing the use and purposes of the poster and website.

The website is created for a full display of our message, displaying different methods for the viewer to under, showing the poster, video and also a scale that shows the price of the creation of each paper cup.

The poster is created with photoshop, withe the color scheme of black, white, green and brown, showing symbolism for coffee and trees, and was heavily influenced by Jacky Adelstein's golden retriever poster as well as the summer sounds festival 2016 poster, from Jacky I learned to use the interactive elements as well as the center composition. From the Festival poster, the layout intrigued me so I developed my own to a similar style, I felt that the square outline centered the poster leading the eye directly to the cup.  Some developments that I went through making this poster was to tone done amount of images and opacity of the poster making it less busy and easier to see.

The website went through many changes, from colour scheme, layout and message. the first website started by just showing facts on damages paper cups are causing, but not actually giving the solution or message the project is trying to portray, the second website gave a better understanding of the message and also where the interactivity started to develop, but the message, what we want to show, different ways the audience could understand the project is still not achieved. The final outcome of the website went followed a different colour scheme and presented with the project logo displaying itself with a clearer message of our project as well as the poster and video.

The video made the most changes and improved from the first draft, at the start we went with a routine of the main character buying coffee everyday while showing consequences, then the solution, but the was too time consuming and also the message is not clear enough for a five minutes video. The changes that were made was to cut down the unnecessary footage as well as having interaction with the audience, also adding split screen affects to display the constancy of the paper cup being bought in a much shorted time span. The video ended up being two minutes long and the message was definitely much clearer as well as showing the use of the poster and website.

Overall what we want to present and the message we want the audience to perceive is to not only understand the problem the continuation of paper cups could cause, but also to face the problem in a more positive way, instead of demanding the public to stop using paper cups, we wanted from the audience is to face this problem with a reason and motivation, in a modern and creative method. Wanting them to understand the consequences as well as solution to the problem in a short period of time, through three different interactive methods.

Further improvements I feel like for both the promotional video and interactive poster would be to further improve interactivity. Interactivity is what I feel like have worked best for my project, making it drastically different from the standard. To further improve this interactivity I would want to implement options in the video for audiences to select that hones into parts that peeks their interest then gives details on selected parts. The poster I feel like benefited the most from interactivity, but to make it more efficient and unorthodox, I would want the poster to be displayed on a touch screen where it could be drawn on through a stylus or finger. These changes were difficult to apply due to limited resources, the video changes were difficult to apply since we did not have the screen big enough to present the poster. But if these changes were made the understanding to the video, poster and message would be much clearer.
